Synthetic Papers & Their Usage

Synthetic Papers

Synthetic papers, which are manufactured using petroleum based synthetic resins like polystyrene, polypropylene and polyethylene, bear a striking resemblance to plastic films in terms of characteristics. On the other hand, they look just like regular papers but do not absorb moisture or swell, which makes them tough and ideal to support quality printing for a long time. They have been around since the 1970s and any application requiring long lasting durability makes use of synthetic papers due to their fantastic chemical, tear and water resistant properties.

Nowadays, synthetic papers come in plethora of varieties to suit everyone’s needs – coated, uncoated, calendared, blown, biaxially oriented and cast. There are even such variants as the self adhesive synthetic paper, which is used for making name tags and stickers.

According to experts, there are countless items which necessitate the usage of synthetic papers for their manufacture, primarily because of their versatility, lightweight and durability. Given below are some popular applications of the highly useful resin materials:

  • Pressure Sensitive Stickers – Synthetic papers find their usage in the preparation of waterproof and durable pressure sensitive stickers or labels for medical packaging, supply chains and shipping containers. These stickers are highly resistant to solvents and chemicals as well. They are compatible with all types of digital printing technologies. They contain exclusive bonding to permanent as well as temporary adhesive systems.
  • Labels & Tags – The labels that we so often get to see in medicine bottles, food containers, beverage bottles, etc. are made with nothing but self adhesive synthetic papers . Even tags are prepared using this material because of its excellent ability to hold prints. The printed information does not fade away and stays intact for a long period of time.
  • Laminated Key & Car Tags – Synthetic papers are also used in the making of laminated key and car tags. These materials give a pleasant and professional appearance to the cards while making them durable simultaneously. They are generally layered on top of each other for creating multi-layered cards. They can be easily printed using any proper regular combination of printing techniques – gravure, flexo, litho, screen and letterpress.

In addition to the above mentioned applications, synthetic papers are also popularly used for creating graphics. This is because the material is compatible with a wide range of moulding systems like blow and injection moulding. They provide breathability and prevent formation of bubbles & blisters. Besides, they are an eco-friendly alternative to conventional papers made from wood pulp.
