Differences Between Coffee & Tea


Coffee and tea are the two most popular caffeinated beverages in existence. While the former was cultivated for the first time ever in Arabia around 674 AD, the latter was discovered by Chinese emperor Shen Nong accidentally when a leaf dropped in boiling water.

Scientifically, tea and coffee do not differ much from one another. Both are evergreen crops and can develop into large trees if natural growth is allowed. Each of them produces a beverage whose flavour is significantly affected by conditions like moisture, surrounding vegetation and soil condition. And also, they are the two of the most commonly bought vending products in Melbourne.

On the molecular level, however, these beverages have fairly conspicuous distinctions. Tea contains catechin and tannin that are helpful in preventing heart disease and cancer, along with polysaccharides, natural fluorine, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. On the other hand, coffee consists of chlorogenic acid, trigonelline, amino acid, phenolic acid, minerals, carbohydrates, aldehydes, organic acids, esters, ketones, mercaptans and amines. It also contains some antioxidants that can improve the immune system or aid in fighting various diseases, which are basically the main health benefits of drinking coffee.

Now let’s get down to the differences in caffeine content of each of the beverages. Coffee has approximately 125 to 185 milligrammes of caffeine in every cup. The effects of this caffeine are generally quick. In excess, however, it can give rise to feelings of anxiety. Tea contains about 55 milligrammes of caffeine in every cup, with the quantity varying in different kinds of tea. It can enhance concentration, and also improve the senses of smell & taste.


When considered in terms of medical differences, coffee is often regarded as a natural combating agent against asthma. This is because it helps the airways within the lungs to relax. Besides that, java is also capable of fighting drowsiness, improving athletic performance, relieving pain and easing congestion caused by flu & colds. On the other hand, tea is known to restrict cholesterol, regulate high blood pressure, suppress ageing, prevent food poisoning, stop cavities, combat viruses and temper allergic reactions.

These are the fundamental distinctive features between coffee and tea. Although both have various health benefits as well as medicinal properties, they can have adverse impacts on the body if consumed in excess quantities. This adverse impact includes indigestion, heartburns, etc. Therefore, most experts generally advise having not more than 2 or 3 cups of either coffee and tea every day.
